Government Mandated Pregnancy

I just read a couple of? opinion pieces on that it is time to reframe the argument on abortion. It should not be about abortion, it should be about forced pregnancy. I thought the following articles particularly informative.

In “Framing the ‘A’ Word” Deanna Zandt talks about the connotation of the terms “Pro-Choice” and “Pro-Life” and influence they have had over popular thinking for the last few decades.? She argues that we? are overdue to reframe the argument in order to correctly convey what we mean.

Finding the “right way” to talk about abortion, reproductive rights and women’s rights has been the point of contention not just between the conservatives and the progressives, but within each side as well. How do we talk about these issues in a way that not just demonstrates our point of view, but that connects with the people that we want to hear our ideas?

Amanda Marcotte follows this up with a few suggestions I think are particulary apt, and which highlight my views on this subject better the “Pro-Choice”.

I suggest to pro-choice bloggers is when talking about abortion, focus your language on the government enforcement aspects, because that makes people squirm. While it’s accurate to call what we oppose “laws banning abortion”, it’s also accurate to call it “forced childbirth” and “government mandated pregnancy”. That’s framing in a nutshell–instead of invoking people’s mixed feelings about female sexuality and reproduction, invoke people’s fear of tyranny. (”Framing and Naming“)
