To introduce this series a piece of octopus propaganda: The Vulgar March.
The “Vulgar Army” series will touch on two very broad topics: 1) The use of the octopus (or tentacles) as a metaphor in propaganda and political cartoons (OCTOPROP) and 2) The octopus/squid (or tentacles) in pop culture (OCTOPOP).
The octoprop sections will attempt to examine the use of the octopus as a metaphor and its origin. The octopop section is a little less serious. It will strive to be both a love letter to, and a parody of, the use of octopus, squid and tentacles in pop culture. There will be a particular emphasis on the octopus in pulp art and literature and its derivatives. In addition there will be a few pieces that don’t really fit into either octopop or octoprop such as a few scientific/historical illustrations and other random illustrations.
NB: Due to time constraints initially there will only be weekly additions to this series.
